The Beacon Process

There are three distinct processes that underpin The Beacon Scholarship for University:

A. The Initial Award

B. Ongoing Monitoring of Performance

C. Scholarship Renewal

Beacon Process 2

The steps in each process and rough timeline are as follows:

A. The Initial Award

  1. Candidate registers on The Beacon Scholarship website and downloads a Nomination Form, to be completed asap by Head of candidate's current school;
  2. BET advises candidate whether, in principle, it will support the application;
  3. Candidate meanwhile completes UCAS application, plus any funding application required by a university offering The Beacon Scholarship;
  4. University interview, if required (November/December);
  5. University makes an offer of admission to the candidate (January/February);
  6. BET invites candidate to complete full Beacon Scholarship Application Form and Financial Disclosure (January - March);
  7. Candidate is invited for interview and assessment by BET (March/April);
  8. BET and Beacon Partner jointly decide whether or not a Beacon Scholarship is to be awarded (April/May);
  9. An Award Letter is sent by BET to the successful candidate (May);
  10. Candidate and their parents accept the award and its Terms and Conditions by completing the Award Acceptance Form (May/June);
  11. A UK visa is obtained by the successful candidate (July/August); click here to find out more about UK visa requirements
  12. A UK Mentor is assigned to the Beacon Scholar (September/October).

B. Ongoing Monitoring of Performance

  1. At the beginning of each term the assigned Mentor and the Beacon Scholar meet and set specific academic, co-curricular, social influence and citizenship targets. These targets are formalised on a Target Sheet and sent to The Beacon Equity Trust. A copy is retained by the Beacon Scholar;
  2. Targets are accepted by the Beacon Equity Trust;
  3. Every term the Beacon Scholar reviews their targets;
  4. At least once each term the Mentor meets the Beacon Scholar and discusses performance against target. A record is made on the Target Sheet which is sent to the Beacon Equity Trust at the end of the term. If necessary, new targets are set and previous ones adjusted to reflect ongoing reality;
  5. A copy of the Target Sheet is sent to the Beacon Scholar's parents.

 C. Scholarship Renewal

  1. At the end of an academic year and before the beginning of the next, the Beacon Scholar must complete a short application for Continuation of The Beacon Scholarship, including updating their Financial  Disclosure;
  2. On receipt of the application, The Beacon Equity Trust and the Beacon Partner assess Scholar performance against targets and decide whether or not to continue the scholarship for the next academic year;
  3. The Beacon Scholar is informed by letter whether or not a Scholarship Continuation has been awarded;
  4. The Beacon Scholar accepts the award and its Terms and Conditions by completing the Award AcceptanceForm.
