Citizenship & Service

A core component of The Beacon Scholarship for University is 'citizenship'. During their course of undergraduate study Beacon Scholars are required to participate in and contribute to their community. This could entail eg involvement in a university club or organisation focused on helping disadvantaged people; responding to challenges of the environment; ensuring the welfare of animals; becoming a contributing member of a charitable organisation; or engaging with an appropriate community-based organisation outside the university. Beacon Scholars will be required to produce evidence of their involvement in a citizenship/service endeavour on an ongoing basis.

Citizenship 2

Every academic year during the holidays three Leadership Events, called Scholars Leadership Days and Workshops, are held for Beacon Scholars (click here for dates). Each event is organised around a structured agenda involving talks by invited speakers, service-led activities and project work - all focused on developing ethical leadership skills - and each is for the mixed age group of all Beacon Scholars.

If they are in their home country during term holidays attendance at Scholars Leadership Events is compulsory for all Beacon Scholars. The days are structured to encourage Scholars to interact and learn from one another, as well as gain insights from sources outside their normal home and school environment.

Recent Scholars Leadership Events have included:

    • public speaking
    • team-building
    • ethical leadership debating
    • summer Citizenship Project presentations

Service Project

During the summer holiday before beginning university and in the summer holiday during their undergraduate degree, Beacon Scholars are required to undertake a service-led project in their home country which generally involves community work. They then present it to other Scholars and the Beacon Community during a Leadership Symposium at the end of the summer, held for all Beacon Scholars (school and university) in the region.
