Beacon Changemakers

The Beacon Scholarship is a leadership development programme that nurtures 'changemakers'. We find young people with leadership potential who have financial need; provide them with access to the highest quality education; offer leadership training and 'high-touch' mentoring; and create a vertical pathway for transition into leadership positions. The vision is to develop a group of ethical changemakers who have a multiplier effect to generate positive social change.

Our Model

We select all-rounders who (a) have the capacity to 'take people with them' and (b) are already making a difference now. We enable them to access top schools and universities through scholarships using a stakeholder model: education costs are split 1/3 Beacon Partners; 1/3 Beacon; and 1/3 Parents, Sponsors or Guardians. Each Scholar connects with their individual Mentor regularly to review Performance Targets. We offer a Leadership Development Curriculum over a 4-year cycle, and Scholars must do a Citizenship Project every summer.

Develop a group of ethical changemakers who have a ‘multiplier effect’ to generate positive social change

Our Partners

The Beacon has developed partnerships with world-class educational institutions, to promote access for financially disadvantaged students who show leadership potential, but do not have sufficient means to pay full fees.

  • Beacon Schools contribute 1/3 of a Beacon Scholar's annual tuition (and boarding) fees, and provide in-school mentoring and leadership development
  • Beacon University partners contribute 1/3 of annual undergraduate tuition fees and living costs

Partners support no more than 3 Beacon Scholars in any year.

Our Scholars

To win a Beacon Scholarship candidates must show evidence of:

  1. Exceptional academic ability; and
  2. Excellence in sport, music or drama; and
  3. Outstanding interpersonal skills; and
  4. Role-model citizenship

Additionally, they should, in their behaviour and outlook, demonstrate they are a 'Changemaker':

(a) show the capacity to 'take people with them'; and

(b) be able to make a difference now, not at some later point in time.

Our scholars exhibit these characteristics, and are required to continue to do so in order to qualify as Beacon Scholars.
