Lawrence Mutua

Lawrence Large16 years old, attending St. Andrew's Senior School, Turi. Lawrence was awarded a Beacon Scholarship in June 2014.

Lawrence applied himself well since his return to school and impressed with his attitude, work ethic and desire to succeed after having a challenging first term due to his internet connection. In mock iGCSEs he earned several grade 7s and 6s and is confident he will improve in his final exams.

Whilst home-learning Lawrence kept up with his football by training each day, and when he returned to school he participated in intra-boarding house football and basketball matches. He worked hard on his fitness and stamina in athletics and managed to reduce his 400m time by 10 seconds and his 100m time by 1-2 seconds.

He organised a football match against the staff and helped a classmate with sports filming coursework for his iGCSE. Lawrence also organised peer study sessions for his P.E class, studying every week before the start of exams. Together with two other Scholars, he gave a powerful presentation in assembly on leadership and community participation.

Lawrence has continued to support his community library in Nairobi, assisting with the opening and closing to allow students’ access. He has met with his school librarian and helped organise a large donation of books from school for the library. He is planning to raise more funds and together with the librarian, develop a resource cataloguing system.

Beacon Workshop Participation

Lawrence's 2021 Summer Beacon Citizenship Project was about raising awareness and reducing the stigmatisation of people living with disabilities in Kenya.

In Leadership Workshops, he answers questions well, is confident and happy to share personal experiences in his presentations. Lawrence has improved in participation and engagement and gives quality feedback to others.
